What This Data Is For

Behavior data helps you determine whether your Tier 1 systems are working — or whether you're reacting more than preventing. It's not about labeling students. It's about identifying patterns in expectations, supervision, consistency, and support so you can strengthen systems before behavior escalates.

Here is a simple, but clear, data sheet template that can help you identify patterns, trends, and decide where your focus should be when it comes to behavior across your building.

How to Use It

Start by analyzing by behavior type and spread, not by teacher.

Look for:

  • Behavior types with both high incidents and high offenders
  • Behavior types with high incidents but low offenders
  • Patterns within certain grade levels
  • Wide variation across classrooms
  • Trends month to month

Then ask:

Is this widespread or isolated? Is this a clarity issue or a consistency issue? Is this prevention or intervention work? Only after identifying patterns should you move to individual conversations.

If You Notice This → Consider This

  • High incidents + high offenders → Expectations may need to be retaught building-wide
  • High incidents + low offenders → Targeted Tier 2 intervention
  • Low incidents + high offenders → Minor behaviors happening broadly but not escalating
  • Wide variance between teachers → Adult response consistency issue
  • Spikes in specific grade → Grade-level systems reset
  • Increasing monthly trend → Prevention systems need strengthening

Reflection Questions

  • Is this pattern widespread or isolated?
  • Are we teaching expectations consistently — or assuming students know them?
  • Do teachers feel confident managing Tier 1 behavior?
  • What preventative move could reduce this trend next month?
  • If you can't clearly identify whether this is Tier 1 or Tier 2, you need to slow down before acting.
